Materials

Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks are a common choice for wall construction in the tropics due to their strength, durability, and thermal properties. They provide excellent resistance to moisture and can withstand the challenges of the tropical climate. Proper curing and waterproofing measures should be implemented to enhance their performance.

Bricks

Bricks, though not widely used in Nigeria today, can still be used for their thermal insulation and aesthetic appeal. They offer natural beauty, durability, and good resistance to moisture. Different types of bricks, such as clay or fly ash bricks, can be used depending on availability and project requirements.

Timber

Timber walls provide a natural and sustainable option in tropical construction. Properly treated timber can resist moisture, termites, and other pests commonly found in the tropics. Timber walls can be constructed using various techniques, such as timber framing or log construction, depending on the desired aesthetics and structural requirements.

Composite Materials

Sometimes a composite of wood and different kinds of metals can be used as internal partition walls. Aluminum panels offer a light weight yet strong option for internal partitions in offices. A composite of glass and metals can also be used as walls and partitions.

Design Considerations

Thermal Insulation

In the tropics, where high temperatures are prevalent, incorporating proper thermal insulation in walls is essential. Insulation techniques, such as hollow blocks or wall cavities, can help reduce heat transfer and improve energy efficiency.

Ventilation Openings

Adequate ventilation openings, such as windows, louvers, or vents, should be incorporated into the design of the walls. This promotes natural airflow, enhances cross-ventilation, and helps regulate indoor temperature and humidity levels.

Moisture Control

Moisture control is vital in tropical construction to prevent the growth of mold, rot, and other moisture-related issues. Proper waterproofing measures, such as the application of moisture barriers or the use of vapor-permeable materials, should be implemented to protect the walls from water infiltration and damage.

Soundproofing

Depending on the building’s location and purpose, soundproofing measures can be integrated into the walls. This helps reduce external noise transmission and enhances indoor acoustic comfort.

Finishes and Treatments

Exterior Finishes

The choice of exterior finishes should consider both aesthetic appeal and durability in the tropical climate. Materials such as cement-based coatings, textured paints, or natural stone cladding can provide protection against weathering and enhance the building’s appearance.

Interior wall finishes should be selected with consideration for both aesthetics and functionality. Plaster board, cement rendering/plaster, or natural finishes such as bamboo or woven panels can be used to create a comfortable and visually appealing interior environment.
